As a fourth year doctoral candidate, in addition to having completed comprehensive examinations and prospectus and working on the dissertation, my thoughts are also turning towards the job market and securing that first academic position. This purpose of this blog is to chronicle the trials and tribulations of completing my Ph.D. and finding that first job.

Changing Peer Review - Again

Well, the last time I wrote about this topic was back in October (see Scholarship, Open Journals and Peer Review) and prior to that you'd have to go back to June (see Does Academic Publishing Need To Be Revised?and Some More Items on Academic Publications). I had hoped that Nate, Johannes, Heather, Scott, and others might join in th conversation again at that point, but that didn't really happen.

We've talked about this in the past, does peer review need to be changed and, if it does, how can we use the technology that we currently have available to us as we are changing it. These are interesting questions and, even more interesting was I came across this piece which provides a different prospective on the issue.
Not so much a different viewpoint, but I get the sense that the author isn't an instructional technology / educational technology person (which I thinkis great that the discussion is expanding beyond our community).

So, what do you think? What does this add to our discussion that we have been having? Anything? Nothing?

Some Gaming Links

Not quite monthly this time, but I have a lot of gaming links building up in my Bloglines account, so I wanted to get these out there.

Until next time...

Feedback Requested - AECT Graduate Student Assembly

Re-posted on behalf of myself and my AECT Intern colleagues...

MKB

One of the things that became obvious to us as AECT interns at this past annual convention was the lack of official channels for communication between graduate students and AECT. In an attempt to address this, the 2006 AECT Interns are proposing the creation of a Graduate Student Assembly.

At present we have posted a draft of the by-laws which will serve as the formal organization for this new body within AECT. We ask that you, both graduate students and others, go and visit that entry at the AECT Intern blog (see http://www.aect-members.org/interns/blog/archives/cat_news.php#000684) and provide feedback - on the wording of the draft by-laws, on the issues that we have asked for feedback on, and anything else you feel relevant for the creation of such a body within AECT.

We hope to make this proposal to the AECT Executive Committee and AECT Board in January, so we are asking for the feedback process to begin immediately and we will consider any and all feedback that we receive by Janaury 3 in our final draft that we submit.

We thank you in advance for your input into this process.
