As a fourth year doctoral candidate, in addition to having completed comprehensive examinations and prospectus and working on the dissertation, my thoughts are also turning towards the job market and securing that first academic position. This purpose of this blog is to chronicle the trials and tribulations of completing my Ph.D. and finding that first job.

Blog statistics for May

Well, May has been a slower month for both traffic and entries. I'll try to do better during the month of June...

As for the traffic, as of 11:00am today the simple counter reads a total of 226 visits since 24 March 2005. This means that there were 42 visits to the blog during the month of May.

I came across another statistics feature near the beginning of the month that was added on the evening of 25 May 2005. The StatCounter (see icon on right hand side) tells me that in the past six days there have been six unqiue visitors - five first time and one returning (since the StatCounter installation. These six visitors all came to Breaking into the Academy from Google or from Learning Rocks (thanks Johannes!). These visitors came from ISPs in Canada, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. Five of the six visitors stayed for less than five seconds, but one stayed for between 20 minutes to an hour. Finally, it seems that the entry "This whole publishing racket..." was the most popular entry for the past six days.

Anyway, those are some of the statistics for this blog over the past month. I'll be back again at the end of June with another update.

Word from the first one

As you may recall my very first entry on this blog (see "The first one goes out today") I was applying for my dream job. And this was also the real purpose of starting this particular blog, to detail my job search and the trials and tribulations of finishing up my doctoral program.

The dream job that I actually applied for was a combination of a number of available positions at the same institution where they had a series of needs, X number of available positions now with more coming in the Fall, and they encouraged applicants who could fill more than one hole.

Well, it appears that one of the holes that I was able to fill was filled by someone else and the other positions that I was a potential candidate for have been taken off the table for now and will be re-advertized again in the Fall. So the door isn't completely shut, just closed for a semester or two, which I think is a good thing for me, as it will allow me to get another semester or two (and the requirements that come with it) under my belt. It will also bring me a semester or two closer to being ABD and closer to convocation. So, that's a positive thing.

So, as I begin the process of getting ready for comprehensive examinations this summer, I'll try and keep you updated on here as much as possible.
